We love movies with a passion. Much of our popular discourse is animated by extolling the virtues of our favourite series and movies. Sometimes we disparage movies we feel are inadequate. But today I feel I need to address the sickening and infantile behaviour of men using their movie mogul or acting power to manipulate women.
World media has been replete with the sordid details of Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuse of women. The founder of Miramax films which has released great movies like Pulp Fiction and The Crying Game has completely tarnished his career with the abuse allegations. There are now over 90 women who have claimed to have been harassed and at least a dozen have claimed to have been raped. Amongst the high profile accusers include serious acting luminaries Gwyneth Paltrow and Rose McGowan. I believe the actors unreservedly and would rather not have to write about such sordid acts, but it's simply too important not to address. And anyone who blames the women for not acting earlier is oblivious to the power of corruptible high power men. And the ramifications of acting when your job is on the line. If my fiancé Lena was the victim of such acts I wold want her to tell me straight away, and my male chivalrous nature would result in me angrily confronting the perpetrator. But we are not here to judge women shockingly abused! I always had suspicions of Weinstein but this is all a lot worse than even I could have imagined. The saddest part of all this is the revelation that a favourite actor of mine Kevin Spacey has been implicated in the last few days. The reputable and highly accomplished Anthony Rapp, currently starring in Star Trek Discovery has revealed that he was abused as a young, fledgling actor by Spacey. Amazingly, Spacey doesn't deny the allegations, but instead of repudiating his actions, has come out as a gay man instead. Oh, the follies of modern Hollywood! We at this site repudiate these reputed sick actions and wholeheartedly endorse the equality of women in film, and in life in general. We think of our favourite film stars like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, James Cagney and Burt Lancaster. They were tough and "nobody's fool" but respectful of women. The great Humphrey Bogart- perhaps the greatest actor ever had a serious alcohol problem- that's common knowledge but he was super gentle with the beautiful Lauren Bacall! There was quite an age difference but he treated the brilliant Bacall with the esteemed respect she deserved. Old fashioned values are always welcome and if, as seems likely Weinstein faces trial and is convicted, justice will have been served. The lesson is the telling one that even mega rich, powerful movie moguls are accountable and no serious crime, especially against women and children should escape unpunished! We are interested in your views on this highly topical and important subject. We would rather talk movies, but this is seminal to women's equality and so we have decided to opine!
